Scrapbooking as much as possible, but sometimes getting distracted by birthdays and life!

Monstrous fun!

Hi! I’m beginning to wonder if I can make a card for somebody that isn’t for a challenge? Does it diminish the meaning if it’s being submitted to 6 different challenges before they even receive it? These are all things I worry about. Then there’s the inspiration and fun that I experience as I’m creating for these challenges and I realize that for myself, it’s OK. I just hope it’s OK for the recipient!

So brewing in my head was a challenge from Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge: Make the Cut (die-cuts), Moxie Fab World and Scrappin-n-Chattin Triangle challenge and the Silhouette Blog challenge to use shapes in a different way.

My son’s birthday is this week and he’s gonna be 12. That is the real challenge! Last year I was told that his card needed to be really cool. The stakes are high and this year he’s really showing so much more maturity – I have to be very careful! So that’s an additional challenge and the payoff could be really great – I could get a “that’s awesome, Mom!”

Triangles were running through my head and I started playing around with how to use them differently in the Silhouette software. So I made a row of triangles (actually from a banner set), using “Replicate – Row of four”. Then I decided that I could make them teeth and went from there. It turned into a monster’s mouth with yellow teeth cut from light yellow velvet paper (I welded them together with a narrow rectangle at the bottom to hold them in place):

Somebody needs to brush better!

Somebody needs to brush better!

The sentiment came from one I’d heard (and maybe even had a stamp for). I decided most of it would hide behind the monster’s teeth. I lined the text up with the edge of the teeth and used a black Silhouette Sketch Pen to “write” the words on the inside of the mouth:

Can you see where this is going?

Can you see where this is going?

I wanted the monster to be hairy, but not necessarily soft so I thought I’d use a green confetti-like glitter with the Silhouette Double-Sided Sticker Paper for the monster’s jaws and an arrow inside:

The sticker paper didn't cut very well. I don't know what happened, but I was able to cut it with an exacto and all was good with the arrow.

I cut the word “EAT” out of blue and black (doing the shadow thing) and used sketch pens to draw the cake on this inside – I just had to ungroup the cake shape and then use “no cut” for everything other than the color I wanted to draw.

I think the arrow was too detailed for this kind of giltter. It would have been better with a super-fine glitter.

So because of the tabs I’d added to the base of the teeth, I was able to glue just that part down, so the teeth kind of come out at you and you can see there are words underneath. Here’s what the front looks like completed:

Can you see a monster?

Can you see a monster?

I am so happy with the way the teeth stick out!

So triangles – check and different ways to use die cuts – check (drew the cake and the text on the front), fun for me – check, appreciated by my 12 yo – we’ll have to see! He’s always been so sweet about being positive about “homemade” anything, so let’s hope that hasn’t changed and that he enjoys this creation!

I used: Cardstock from DCWV and Stampin-Up!, velvet paper from SEI, Silhouette Sketch Pens and Double-Sided Sticker Paper, Martha Stewart glitter, adhesive from American Crafts and Zig (A to Z, just noticed that!) Silhouette Cameo for shapes and fonts : Sarah Hurley set of 2 triangles, arrows, fonts: Gatsby FLF and Chunky Times. I can’t figure out where I got the birthday cake from the inside.

I’m entering the four challenges mentioned above (so happy that I know how to do the text links now! Thanks to a crafty new facebook friend!)

Thanks so much for coming by and taking on this monster! In case you didn’t put it all together the card reads “birthdays are nature’s way of telling us to eat more cake” I’ll probably add a Happy Birthday stamp to the inside. I kind of forgot that, but have plenty of time to add it! Please leave a comment letting me know all the spelling and grammar errors I made. I am trying to do this quickly so that my son doesn’t walk in and see it! 😉
